Well here it all depends on how Important the pictures are to you

by OH Smeg Moderator In reply to How to get back the weddi ...

If they are IMPORTANT and must be recovered at all costs packup the Thumb Drive and send it to a Specialist Data Recovery Service and pay them to recover what they can off the Thumb Drive.

If it would be Nice to recover the pictures you can attack the drive with some Data Recovery Software and attempt to recover the Data off it. There are many available and while the better ones cost you there are still numerous available that are free to use like Recurva from Piriform available here

http://www.piriform .com/recuva
remember to remove the space from between piriform and the .com for a working link.

If you chose to attempt a Recovery you need to remember that the more that you unsuccessfully mess with the thing the less likely you are to have a full recovery when you attempt to pay a Professional to recover your pictures and the more it is likely to cost so if you simply must recover the pictures stump up and pay the professional as it will be more likely to be possible.

Of course you could always ask your sister does she have the pictures and get copies from her which would cost nothing.

For future use Flash Drives are not Permanent storage and should be treated as such, you should never rely on them for anything Important that you do not have copies of already.

Also there are only 2 types of computer users those who have lost all of their data and those who are going to loose all of their data. So it's best to work with the idea that whatever you are using is going to fail when you need it and act accordingly.

Get back your wedding pictures.

by Caroltrew5645 In reply to How to get back the weddi ...

Wedding pictures are very precious. You should have backed them up on another drive or storage device.
But, right now, in order to get back these pictures from your flash drive, you need a third-party data recovery tool.

the first thing I do

by Sue T In reply to How to get back the weddi ...

is try the flash drive on another computer. I have had flash drives that tell me that work perfectly fine on another computer. If it works on another computer then backup those pictures immediately just to be on the safe side. Whenever you have any data, pictures, etc. that you don't want to lose you should always make sure you have that data, etc. in at least 2 different places in case one fails.

This would have been my first response too, if Sue T hadn't got her reply in before me. Just as she describes, I've found that a flash dive may be read on some machines but not others.

All around good suggestions so far

by SKDTech In reply to How to get back the weddi ...

One I would add is to try accessing the drive from a Linux LiveCD environment. I have occasionally encountered drives that won't recognize on a Windows machine after being unplugged without "Safely Removing" them first. Usually I am able to read them from a Linux environment and then copy data off of it and reformat to make it work again.

Hit or miss but it depends on what the cause of the problem is.

Ultimately, as Col said, if it is something which would be "nice" to recover you can attempt it yourself. If it is essential to recover the data then you need to get it in the hands of a professional immediately without attempting any further actions which may cause the data to become lost forever.

For backups I use a 321 rule for important data. Data stored in three different places, on at least 2 different media types, and at least one of them offsite. https://www.us-cert.gov/sites/default/files/publications/data_backup_options.pdf

More than likely partition info got munged when

by Charles Bundy In reply to How to get back the weddi ...

unplugging the device w/o safe removal from OS. Like Col said find a good file system recovery tool or go to drive properties and try a fs fix. Sue T's suggestion depends on if the USB flash drive has been recognized by a second system. If the drivers get a fresh load file system check and fix is performed ( sometimes scan and fix pops up depending on fschk).

Hope this helps!

Dead flash

by butkus In reply to How to get back the weddi ...

If you can't get the flash drive to work... there are places for $$$ that will recover it.
There are a few paid programs that may work.. ALWAYS double backup, flash drives can be picky.. try another PC or two.. .plug it in the back directly to the MB.

Piriform Recuva is only effective to recover data from a hard disk.

No it supports external USB devices. Nothing special about flash except that it uses no moving parts. Otherwise it looks like any other DASD to the OS.
