How to get hands on experience for SQL Server 2008 ?

By rmaleshri ·
It seems that SQL Server 2008 is a good database. I have learned and practiced on my own . And also have some experience with Oracle 7. Unfortunately, my employers doesn't provide me any opportunity for hands on experience and I am stuck to Desktop Support role. I cannot afford to change my job. Any advice on how to gain experience and become an expert so that I can be confident enough to leave this job and move to a DBA role in a different company ?

missing hyphen

Perhaps I'm a bit dull, but I was misled at first by your title. A hyphen is required between "hands" and "on". I am afraid I have no answer for your actual question. There are things that I too would like hands-on experience with.

That's going to be difficult nowadays

Junior DBA is the sort of role you need,
Take the certs, might give you a start, SQL Server that is. Oracle certs cost a lot.

Also have a think most datbase roles tend to be either weigthed towards devlopment or operations, one you will probablly need to pick up programming , the other sripting and windows admin.
