If running Windows XP, you need to go to disk management

Make sure external drive is plugged in and seen by OS

These steps will only work if your account has local administrator permissions to make changes to machine. If you are running in a locked down AD environment, ask your systems admin for help.

1. Right click My Computer and go to Manage

2. Click on Disk Management from the left pane

3. Scroll down and find the external drive, right click and select Change Drive Letter and Paths from menu

4. Select the drive letter you want and click OK

Note: If drive letter you want is not available, that means another drive device has reserved it. Go to the properties of that other drive device and change its drive letter to something else, say Z:, and then go back to your external drive and change it to the desired drive letter.
