With Administrator Rights which is the default user right click on any unused part of the screen and left click on Proprieties from the Drop Down Menu.

When the next window opens Left Click on the Desktop Tab and select any of the listed options or you can click on Browse and chose one of your own pictures. When the image is what you want left click on Apply and then OK. :0

I had tried that and selected NONE hoping to get a blank screen but it didn't work - at least it does when the pc opens to my desktop but doesn't get rid of the green landscape scene (XP proff.)during the open and shut down sequences during the bootup/down phases.
Many thanks

Click Start\Settings\Control Panel\User Accounts.
Choose the option 'Change the way Users log on or off'.
Remove the tick from the checkbox next to 'Use Welcome Screen'.
