How to get to command prompt in XP before going into windows

I need to acquire the current machine name from a pc before it goes into windows XP. When I choose safe mode – command prompt, it still forces a login to the local pc first. The issue here is that we have a setup routine we run after windows is built to finalize for the end user and the end user usually mucks it up. we need to be able to retreive the local machine name so we can repair over the phone vs. having them send in for us to reset password, and continue to finalize setup properly. I found the program reg_x86.exe from the NTRESKIT and it works fine, I just need to be able to get to the command prompt before windows invokes…
