i have a cybermax 200 pentium with mmx technology. 48 mb of ram. the mother board is a 8500tvx pentium vx system board. when i first recived the computer it had a 4g hard drive. since then my hard drive crashed and i went out and bought a 8g hard drive. i have reformatted both hd’s with the 8g as the master and the 4g as the slave. my computer when it boots up sees the 2 hard drives and sees the 8g as the primary. however win 98 only sees 2g of it. how do i get my computer to see the full 12g? if possible with out having to reformat it again.

Boot with a Windows 98 boot diskette. Use FDISK to set up the partition on each drive. The 1st question after you run FDISK is “do you wish to enable large disk support”, make sure to answer YES so that the drive will be using FAT32. Set up the larger HD as the primary partition and the other as an extended partition. Then format the drives.
If you don’t want to reformat the drive again, try using a DOS version of Partition Magic. It will allow you to convert the partition to FAT32 and extend it to use the full disk.

I could be wrong… but most likely you formatted your hard drive using the regular FAT file system. A FAT partition can only be up to 2 gig in size. If that is the case, you need to get a program like Partition Magic and convert that FAT system to a FAT32 system if you don’t want to re-format your drives. Otherwise, re-formating is your only choice. If you choose to reformat… the first thing you need to do is create a boot disk. Go to Start | Settings | Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs | Startup Disk and Create Disk. Copy the FORMAT.COM and MSCDEX.EXE file from the C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND folder to that disk. Next, reboot your computer using the boot disk. Use FDISK and redo your partitions. When FDISK asks about using Large Disk support, enter Y. Create the new partitions (on both drives as needed). Reboot and format you hard drive(s).

Re-install Windows 98… If your computer is not capable of booting from the CD-ROM drive to install Windows, the boot disk should contain and load a generic ATA CD-RO

Whoah… I thought nobody would be answering questions this late at night. I thought I was going to be the first one to respond… DLe, you beat me to the “Submit My Answer” button. 🙂

      Anyway… continuation from above…

Use “A:\MSCDEX /D:MSCD001” to map the CD-ROM drive and proceed to install from there…

may i suggest that you will use your 4g hdd as your primary and your 8gig your secondary master partition in to two this may optimize the speed of your drives, your 4 gig will be the fastest.if you agree with it then let your cmos detect them automatically exit and save your bios and then do the traditional repartitioning and reformatting certainly you will get the correct volume of your drives.

be sure to our madeboard recognize HDD > 8 GB, Pentium 1 is old madeboard. If necesseri and possible upgrade bios, then again build partition and format disk.

      1. delete all partition
      2. reboot
      3. create partition, when fdisk ask “Enable Larg disk support” answer “Y” (this need 4 fat 32, in fat 16 max. part. size is 2 GB)
      4. format and reinstall

Your current partition is a FAT16 which is 2GB max. If you want to use the full 8GB without reformatting, use PARTITION MAGIC version 5.

Using Partition Magic, first you convert your FAT16 to FAT32. Then format the remaining 6GB. Then merge the first partition (2GB) with the second (6GB) and you will finish with 8GB. First, go get yourself Partition Magic. NOW!

It’s guaranteed to work. I knew because I used it and I used it a lot for over 500 PCs.

Check the drive properties on Win98 to see if you are set to FAT32. If not, you might want to convert to FAT32 then go to fdisk and check the partition. Make sure you answer yes to the first question. if you have the extended partition, you may haveto delete them and recreate. Format the newly created partition and if you want to see the whole 8GB, you will need partition magic to redo your partition. Either way, you will have two drives (C and D). If you want to start fresh, Make sure you do “FDISK /MBR”, this will destroy the master boot record and lets you start from ground zero. You will need to run FDISK again after FDISK /MBR. Create your partition and make sure you answer yes to FAT32 (first question). If your computer has the ability to boot from the CD, Do it and Win98 will format your drive for you and continue the setup.

I think that this is a Win98 bug. I can’t remember if there’s a patch for it though. I have a 9.2gig hard drive and Diskspace always reports that it’s only a 2gig. I remember reading about it somewhere. Try searching the Microsoft site.

Use the drive converter in win 98 to convert to Fat32.You will find it in the system tools. If it is not there you’ll have to install it by going to add/remove programs in the control panel, click the windows setup tab then select system tools, click on change and select drive converter.

      Hope this wiil help you

If all of these answers do not solve your problem then check into the level of BIOS on your machine. This can do a great deal to solve large disk problems. Hope this helps.
