How to improve audio output (s/pdif, sound card, other?).

By Richiedams ·
Hello.

I am interested in improving computer sound output. I currently have an old, home-made desktop; my partner has a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop. I have read that the best way to transfer audio output to an amplifier, for example, is via an s/pdif output. Optional outputs

I think you would have to buy a specific plugin sound card to get the optical output for audio. I've seen it on DVD/BL players and some HDTVs but not on a PC. It might be possible to output composite (analog) from a PC but when playing digital content but some equalization would be required to fill the mid range.

The high end sound systems that I have worked on

Are all Desktops.

You just can not change things in a Note Book so I wouldn't even begin to think about something like that. They use the cheapest bits that they can in them and even the High End NB that I bought years ago for about 6 times the average NB cost only had the same Realtech Sound Chips as the cheapies.

You really need one of the High End Sound Cards like those made by Creative

Turtle Beach used to have some very good sound cards but I have not heard much of them lately and I do not know if they are still in the business of High End Sound Cards.

remember to remove the space from between the company name and the .com for a working link.

Also every Computer that I have ever worked on that was used in Sound Engineering all used a High End Power Supply to cut down Hum from the mains and not produce any Earth Loops which is not something that is possible with a NB.
