How to install CAB fils. How do I install them – Dell help doesn’t work
by var1016 · about 2 years, 6 months ago
Tags: Software
I have a Dell Latitude 5500 Laptop. Dell sends updates which I always install. This time the update is a load of CAB files (whatever they are) I have no idea how to install them Normally it’s automatic, not this time
Dell help thinks my computer is a Chromebook registered in Spain (I’m in UK) !! SO I’m stuck.
Would appreciate some expert advice. Thanks in advance.

I don’t think it’s a Chromebook. I think it was a laptop with Windows 10 or Windows 11 when it was new.
Did you install Chrome yourself? Or maybe the previous owner? Then these files most likely are not suited for you.Are you sure Dell always sends you updates? Can you tell how? As attachment to a mail or as a download link? If it aren’t cab-files, what extension do they have? And how do you install them if it’s automatic?
A CAB-file (cabinet) is usually something for Windows Update. But you never see them, because Windows update is more or less silent and automatic. And usually they come from Microsoft, not from an OEM like Dell.
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/how-to-install-cab-file-in-windows-10/8b0140f8-ff43-4e5a-a34a-71c47ca688f0 tells how to install a CAB-file if it’s a Windows update. But that’s a highly uncommon way to do Windows updates, so be sure to check this with Dell customer service before you do anything. I mean, before you do anything wrong and damage your Latitude.

Thanks for your response. This download is a set of drivers clearly from Dell. I cannot contact them because the reference number from my laptop apparently (accoring to them) refers to a Spanish Chromebook (whatever that is).
Most of the updates I have received from Dell relate to the BIOS.I have had no trouble so far. Since the computer works anyway, perhaps I’ll ignore these updates and maybe something will srt itself out in the future.

If they are drivers for a Chromebook (that’s a laptop with Chrome OS) obviously they are of no use of you have a Windows laptop.
See if you can download updated drivers (if you want them) yourself from dell.com using the service tag or the exact model number.

Thanks.
I used my service tag – and Dell says I have a Spanish Chromebook. I have no idea what a Chromebook is. I have a Latitude 5500.
Since the drivers were sent to me: I checked the model before downloading etc.
It’s nonsense!

A Chromebook uses a different operating system (Google Chrome) than on MS Windows.

I daresay. My computer is not a Chromebook even if Dell says it is. The software I downloaded is for a Latitude 5500 running Win 10 64bit
