how to install Linksys WPC55AG

By yifentianying ·
who can help me solve my problem of installing Linksys WPC55AG in window 2000 pro
I was tired of contacting Linksys tech guys and have been told I need to download the same driver m times and reinstalled it m times. My notebook is T23 2647 with Window 2000 pro. I donwloaded the driver for Linksys WPC55AG from the official website and installed it according to the manual(before installing the hardware). The windows installation wizard asked me to nominate a location which I did to my CD-ROM burned with the unzipped official driver in it. The windows says it can't obtain the required information and the installation can't be completed. In the device manager, there is question mark in my other devices with the sub which is network adapter. My PCMCIA controller is Texas instruments PCI-1420 cardbus controller driver of which is just updated with the information being 20/6/2003 version 5.0.2195.2908. It's been a painful process of installing Linksys A+G adapter in my T23 2647 2T Thanks

Couple of thoughts:

1) There are multiple revisions of this card (1.0 or 1.1). I would try a couple of different drivers in case you got wrong ones.

2) To test hardware, get a bootable Knoppix CD and see if the machine can boot and recognize the adapter.

3) It may be the registry issue indicated below:

from the FAQs on the Linksys website:
Question:

When trying to reinstall the driver for my network adapter, I get the following error message:
?Cannot install this hardware. There was a problem installing this hardware. <Adapter Name>. An error occurred in the installation of this device. The name is already in use as either a service name or a service display name.? What can I do?

Answer

This problem occurs when registry entries that should have been removed are left in the Windows registry after uninstalling a network adapter on your computer.

Microsoft has provided steps that can be used to remove the registry entries that remain in the registry. Once these entries are removed, the installation of the new or replacement network adapter can proceed normally.

See Microsoft Knowledge Base Article KB823771, titled, ?You Cannot Install Driver Files for Your Network Adapter and You Receive a "Cannot Install This Hardware" Error Message?.

Thanks Robo for the answer. But the problem still remains I think although I haven't used the registry cleaner sent by Linksys tech staff. I reckon that it should have something to do with the Texas Instruments PCI-1420 cardbus controller and Linksys driver. I can't find the fix from MS except for those fixes for 98/ME and XP. Is there any solution except for updating the BIOS?
