How to list running processes?

By LabRaT ·
I am working on a desktop that seems to have a virus. It connects to the Internet (I can ping Internet servers) but I get a "404 File not found error" in IE when I try to get a net page. The OS is Windows ME. How do I get a list of the processes running and how do I end suspect processes?

try Ctrl+Alt+Del, it will display running processes. Another way, run MSCONFIG, it will give you in the start up tab the applications and processes that runs automatically at start up

Yes, I've done that. It seems to show programs (.exe or .com) but I do not think that all processes are listed. Closing the ones shown didn't help.

Sounds like some spyware I've run into lately. Try running SpyBot Search and Destroy as well as Adaware Personal Edition. I have also been verey happy with the MicroSoft Antispware Beta (was Giant Antispyware).

Yes, I have Spybot and Ad-Aware in my toolbox. But you have to connect to their servers to get the updated sigs. The system will not attach to their servers. I may have another clue: I installed FireFox to see if it would connect to the servers. I get an error msg from FF that says "The connection was refused."

Another good program for spyware/adware/hijackers is AdwareAway, located at http://www.adwareaway.com. You should also do a search on CwShredder.exe, sorry I can't remember where I found it, and download and run.

Hi, by pressing the following keys (ctrl + alt + delete) at the same time, a close programs window will appear. Here you can visually see the programs that are currently running in the background. To close these programs out, simply click on the one you wish to close and then click "end task". Note: you would have to press (ctrl + alt + delete) after each program closes, in order to open the close programs window again.
