How to make 3D face replica from photo

By ggardner@internet-works. ·
I would like to be able to create a 3D file in .dxf format, if possible, from a scanned photograph. It doesn't need to be the whole head, just the face so it can be rotated and viewed from any angle. I don't care what program is used to make it. Does anyone know how to do this?

How to make 3D face replica from photo

If you have only _one_ canned photograph, then I would say that this would be impossible, because you have, in the process of taking the photograph and by the very definition of a photograph, removed all 3-D information from the situation, recordinginformation with just x & y coordinates.

However, if you have multiple photographs then more can be achieved. The ideal situation will be to have a series of photographs taken in a complete circle around the object (head) and with the locations of the film and head known wrt some fixed point. It is then relatively easy, using principles of optics, to write a program to calculate, using triangulation, the absolute positions of the various features, etc.

However, I don't know of any commercial software to do this: hopefully, the above will give you enough ideas to know where to start looking. There is a list of some at

Good luck !

I found some software that will do just that. It is called PhotoModeler and works really well.
