how to make a server

I am new to networking and i have only done a peer to peer connection, I want to know how can i create a server using windows 2000/NT and connect 8 workstation in the server. pls. give me a step by step process because i have little knowledge on networking. I will highly appreciate all the answer i can get, and many thanks to whom who will answer my question.
