How to make MBR of HDD as read only

By Ravindra Kumar Chauhan ·
Some times due to the virus attack or some other reason, the MBR of a computers' hard drive goes corrupted or the information therein changes resulting a hard drive crash and data loss.
Will some one kindly tell me any method so that I can write protect the MBR to avoid HDD crash and resulting data loss.
Some BIOS's have this feature that warns in such situation but what for the computers that do not have this type of bios?
We can avoid data loss by taking regular backup but at least re-installing all softwares can not be avoided by this.

I think the support service of the HDD company can help. They can help you to recover the data and check the problem.

Have you used some software to help?
Norton Doctor or ...

The best way is to have anti-virus protection plus some measures to protect from abusing the computer.
The users must have some restrictions (e.g. password protections; and the disk or internet downloads are scanned before used by the computer.)

You cannot make the MBR read-only, unless the motherboard firmware supports it (Trend ChipAway Antivirus or such like). What you can do is make a boot disk (Win98 boot disks are fine for this) and then boot a corrupted system with this disk. At the command prompt, type

fdisk /mbr

which will replace the master boot record on the hard disk with an undamaged copy from the floppy. Floppy disk and hard disk master boot records are functionally identical.

There is a dos disk compresson utility called JAM Archive Manager which has a file named jprotect.sys. This program would ask if you wanted to allow a program to change the system data (MBR, etc). It was an excellent program but not supported in Win9x.
I have used this jprotect.sys without using the disk compression. Also this was a better product than Stacker 3.0. I should have checked first to see if it is still available and will do so after this post.

There is a piece of hardware called a centurion gaurd that will make the entire hard drive read only once you have the machine set up the way you want it.
It works by write protecting all the data on a hardrive exept an area for a temporary file wich is used to make changes to your computer while it is activated but when you reboot this file is deleted and the hardrive goes back to the way it was when the gaurd was activated it can also be deactivated quickly useing a keylock that goes int a blank expansion slot in the back of the computer
