How to Make PC Boot Faster

by the_webninja9 . Updated 18 years, 5 months ago

a While back I had my XP Pro PC set up to boot pretty screamin. Since that time I have encountered a few errors, and bugs and re-installed a few different programs upgraded my Memory and now it seems like it takes forever to boot up.

I started learning PC Repair back in 1996 Graduated a PC Repair course as well as some electronics Courses, so I know a little about the Hardware side of it, but now I am getting fastinated with Editing out the Registry files and trying to learn how to write Reg Keys and use Process Monitor and Process explorer and Auto Runs to really get a better understanding of how things work.

But I remember the way I got my PC to scream on the Boot before was someone told me a few tricks, like maybe editing the Boot INI file or Config Sys File, and there was another trick where you get the PC to Load Straight to Ram memory. I am running 2.5GB of Ram so that is something I think I want to play around with again.

In checking over the Registry Files I am seeing a whole lot of Duplicate Reg Files, this must have occured from trying to re-install Windows and instead of overwriting the files it just added another Reg Key and Reg Files as *.*.1 if you know what I mean. So I am trying to go through an clean out all the Duplicate Reg Files hoping that will help speed up the Boot.

I also heard with certain Mother Boards such as Intel, it makes a big difference if you have the Legacy Options selected in the Cmos. Can anoyone clarify those points for me?
What about the Fast Bios Boot options? Good or Bad? Will removing the Splash Screen help speed up the boot?

Does enabling Hyper Threading Really speed things up or does it just make it slower?

What about deselecting 16 Bit options in the Sys INI files? If I am running mostly 32 bit apps?
Deselcting ISA in CMOS? Good or Bad?

And my Memory I am running 2 GB of one type of Memory and 2-256MB of another kind but the same SPEED. It detects okay, but I sense that it might actually be slowing the Performance down rather than speeding it up. Is that possible?

When I used to have my PC running right, it would only take 2 or 3 seconds for the Bios Boot, Boot to the XP Splash Screen for 5 Seconds then BAMB it loaded windows. That’s why it annoys me so much now, because I know how good it can be if you get it all right.

Can you guys give me some tips to get back to the Scream Machine I once had?

Thanks,

Mark*
