How to Make XP on Dell D630 sees both SATA 1.5 Drives

by khongphutu . Updated 18 years, 6 months ago

My Dell D630 NB is configured to boot from either of the internal SATA or from the expansion bay drive by changing the boot order via BIOS, under Boot Sequence. I can boot to either the expansion bay drive or from internal drive by changing the boot order. After booted up, the then active OS (XP Pro, Vista Ultimate, W2K3EE-X64, RHEL 5.1 with VMware WS) can not see the other SATA drive. The BIOS’ On Board Devices’ SATA Operation is set to AHCI (instead of ATA) and Module Bay Device is Enabled. Both SATA drives was only visible to each OS during the initial OS installation. Rescan the bus on each booted OS did not help.

I believe since both drives are SATA which is point-to-point, only one drive can appear, hence the BIOS boot order control which one to be visible first to the BIOS. Is there any way I can make the second SATA drive visible to the OS running on the first drive (regardless of order)?

Do I have to use one SATA drive and one ATA (PATA) drive in order to see both at the same time?

Thanks for any recommendations or hints.
Regards,
