How to prepare to re-install XP Pro?

By AndeAnderson ·
I remember reading an answer to this question which said there was a file which contained the Activation code which could be copied before re-installing the XP Pro software, so we would not have to call Microsoft to reactivate XP Pro.

What is the file name?

Thanks

If you are reinstalling Windows over the current one, you do not need to save the file.

The file is for clean installing Windows.

If there is a major hardware change, you have to activate. Windows will tell you.

Reinstalling did not correct the problems I am having with XP Pro.

I need to do a complete clean install. There have been no hardware changes.

If you reinstall Windows XP, you normally have to reactivate it, but there's a way around reactivation. Windows XP maintains the activation information in the file Wpa.dbl, which you'll find in the Windows\System32 folder. After you activate, and any time you add hardware to your system, back up the file to another disk. If you need to reinstall Windows XP for any reason, go through the installation routine, then copy the latest version of Wpa.dbl to the Windows\system32 folder.
