How to prevent online games

By Sameh Fouad ·
I have a question and I hope you can give me a hand, do I have a way to prevent the users in our network from playing online games such as yahoo games?
Thanks

If the games use certain ports, which you will find out about by going to the game site and reading the instructions, you can block the ports at your firewall.

Otherwise, if you know the URL of the game server and your firewall has the capability to blacklist sites, put the URL and the IP address of the game server in the prohibited list of your firewall or web proxy server.

If you have a proxy server like Squid (see http://www.squid-cache.org), you can set up the users to only access certain sites they need for business. Alternatively, allow all sites except the blacklisted ones, and remember to block downloads of executables, screen savers and such like.

Squid comes as part of Fedora Core 4, it is Open Source and it is relatively easy to administer.
