How to print from DOS base program

By low_yu ·
I still have some non-windows base programs. I need to capture the LPT1 or LPT2 inorder to print my program. I found difficulty to capture LPT port in W2K espeacially through the networking printer.

Anyone can hepl me on this.

How to print from DOS base program

If the printer is a network printer, capturing to it should be as easy as going to a command prompt and using this command:

NET USE LPT1: \\ServerName\PrinterName

You can create a plain text file with that command in it using NotePad, then save / rename the file with a .CMD extention. Drop it in your startup group.

The potential problem I see is if the shared printer is an inkjet or cheap laser, your DOS program may not be able to use it. Many modern printers now rely on windows to actually render the page (so-called "GDI printers"), and can't handle simple being snet print data.

You can adfd the /persitent:yes switch to the
NET USE LPT1: \\ServerName\PrinterName, so you don't have to keep mapping the printer to lpt1

The Win2k printer driver should provide DOS printing services. Check if it's enabled. If it doesn't show any DOS options in the configuration dialogue, see if there's an updated driver.
