How to prove ownership of a computer device?

I can provide proof I own my car (title)
I can provide proof that I own my house (deed).

As we all know, TR does not help folks who (allegedly) lost their password (nudge, wink) since the device may be (and probably is) stolen.

If I buy something on eBay, how do I know it’s not stolen?

What could be the solution?

Some sort of ‘global registry’ run by the credit-reporting agencies?

Then TR could query the database, like running a credit-check, and validate the correct owner.

Some sort of RSA certificate-based identification system for each device?

Cars have VINs that are tracked nationally, and you can find a stolen car very easily through the vin…
