How to read an Excel file without opening the file

Hi,

I would like to know how to read a set of data in an Excel file, either with the PC or via LAN, without opening the Excel file using Excel VBA programming.
No writing is required.

Next question: Is it possible to write a data into Excel file without opening the file?

Please advise anyone.
