How to recover data from external hard drive?

By Tulika07 ·

I desperately need help. I have a WD my book essential hard drive. The USB of the old case was damaged and I replaced with a new case. But now the drive does not show up in my computer but the safely remove hardware option shows the drive. I read forums and assigned it a drive and created new partitions but did not format the drive. I have tried all sorts of software but it doesn't work. I want my old data back. Please help. Did I make a mistake by making new partition. Can i get my old data back from the drive. HELP!!!!!!

Possibly here it all depends on what you where told in Drive Management about this drive. So what did Drive Management tell you was going on here?

As to how to proceed here what is the type of Drive inside the case a IDE/PATA or SATA Drive?

If it's a IDE/PATA you may have a Jumper setting that needs altering the drive should be set to Master not Slave or Cable Select/CS.

If it's a SATA Drive most likely the USB Interface on the old enclosure wasn't faulty but the drive itself was.

Only way to check this for certain is to fit it as a Internal Drive inside a computer and test the Drive with WD's Data Lifeguard for DOS Utility available free here

Download the DOS version and copy it to a suitable Boot Disc that is supported by your system and then test the HDD by booting off the WD Utility Disc and running the test.

if it fails the first test remove it fit to a different computer and retest. If it fails the second test the drive has or is on it's way to Silicon Heaven and if you must recover the Data your best bet is to stop playing with the drive IMMEDIATELY and pack it up and send to a Specialist Data Recovery House who can deal with Dead Drives.

The best place for this that I have ever dealt with is Knroll On Track but I'm sure that there are others who can do things like this.

Hi, Tulika07,
You still have a chance to recover your old data. Please try changing the drive letter again and then reboot your machine.

WD external drive data recovery

by willrofr In reply to How to recover data from ...

Just add one more thing: to maximize chances of data recovery, the first thing is to STOP using your WD drive immediately! If you continue using drive, you significantly increase the risk that the files you want to recover will be lost forever due to overwritten. Learn more here: http://www.western-digital-data-recovery.com/

Meanwhile, if the HDD can't be right detected, sometimes restart your computer & re-connect the drive can help overcome the issue.

EaseUS is utterly useless when it comes to a specific type of drive: 3TB external. The drive I tried wouldn't even show up on the drive list. This is most likely due to limitation of Windows and its poor implementation of GPT. The same 3TB has no problem whatsoever working under other OSs such as OS X.
