How to reinstall windows without formatt

By joanna ·
Hello, I'm a Win95 user. I have problems with explorer.exe recently and it keeps crashing the system. After attempts to reinstall IE5 failed, I attempted to reinstall windows over itself (clicking "no" for overwritting newer system files), only to find out that Windows will not boot anymore! The error message says that there are faults in system.ini, and 10 .vxd files in the directory "c:\windows\system\vmm32\" are not present or are of invalid version. It then goes on to say that because of this, configuration manager cannot run and windows cannot start.

As I know I messed up with the windows system file, I now consider deleting the whole thing and reinstalling it, preferably trying Win98. The only problem is, I want to know if it is possible to install Windows without having the format the hard disk, as I have important files on it and I do not have a way to back up the data (apart from using millions of floppys!). I don't mind reinstalling the program files, so is it possible just to delete "c:\wind

Yes,it is possible to reinstall without having to reformat. Just rename the c:\windows directory to c:\"whatever". Then, insert the Win95 CD and reinstall.

Hi Joana!
I've been there and I've tried different ways. That's what worked best:
Get as hold of a old HardDrive, big enough to hold your files. Install it as a slave or second master. Now you'll have a second disk (probably d:). Format this new drive, backup your files to it and re-format your original HD. Windows (Microsoft products in general) has a funny way of installing on existing systems and programs; it looks and keeps the most up-to-date files in some cases without asking. What if one of this files is the one that is causing the problems?
Go the extra mile and save yourself a lot time and grief.

Good Luck!

You didn't tell us what happened with the IE5 reinstall. This might be an important clue as to what began the whole problem.

First, you'll need to get your system up and running. Just reinstall Windows 95 like you did before and check "yes" to overwrite the newer files. This should get you back into a situation where you can boot and remove the error messages.

Now, you have to deal with the original problem. My suggestion is to uninstall IE5. Click Start; Settings; Control Panel; Add/Remove programs. Select IE5 and click Add/Remove. After it is uninstalled, you should have no problems reinstalling it.

Yes, it is possible to delete the windows folder but it's not required in your situation.

Hello
Did you tried ton install your Win95 on a different folder like win95? But wait a minute if you do this you have to reinstall you programs files one by one after the new installation this options will give the chance to recover your data on your hard drive.
second option
if you can lunch your windows with safe mode and if you are the person like the chalenge you have an other option and it is more havy tha you have to work with the windows registry first you have to make backup copy the two files user.dat and system.dat existing under windows folder note you have to do this under DOS prompt. then once you run windows safe mode lunch regedit make reaserch for the missing files reclaimed under normal start up, and delete these keys value after you do that you have to be able to run windows under normal mode and you will have check and/or reinstall you software applications

good luck
Antoine

Here's another alternative. Purchase PartitionMagic. If your hard drive has enough free space on it, use partitionmagic to create a new partition (can be done w/o formatting entire drive and with existing data intact). Install windows 98 onto thenew partition. Then move your old data files over. At that point you could reformat that partition (the original one containing the problem) and start over there, or keep the extra partition as a place to keep data so this problem never happens again.

Just a thought.
