how to replace

The first thing you need to do, is determine what CPUs will work in your motherboard.

Check for an FAQ for your PC model at Compaq.
Some common limits:
Present CPU: Fastest CPU:
Celeron 300MHz Celeron 800MHz
AMD K6 AMD K6/2-550 MHz
Pentium II 233MHz Pentium II 450MHz

Depending on the age of the system, and CPU used, you are apt to get more bang for your buck by getting a new system.

Compaq provides all sorts of manuals online.
If you had mentioned the model number I could have directed you to the exact page. This is the address for the list of Presario models.
