How to replicate server config that we sell to customers?

By mikeharris7 ·
Hey all,

I work for a company that sells a automation product that, among other things, includes a server. Manufacturing has come to me asking for a way to quickly image new servers with our configuration to ship them out the door.

I figure the best way to do this is to create some kind of configuration to create an image from, and run sysprep on it before we image it, and then simply image the new machines somehow before we ship them.

So far I've only tried Ghost, as it was "given to me to see if I could make it work". I strongly get the feeling that Ghost will not work. We're using IBM servers that lock up everytime they boot with a Ghost boot disk. Plus I've read a few things that make me think Ghost is intended for workstations only and really doesn't support imaging servers.

So, I'm looking for ideas. There are products out there that appear to image servers for disaster recovery/backup purposes that I'm wondering if they'd work in this application.

Also, another thing to take into account is that we want to make sure we're 100% legal on licenses. We're a Microsoft reseller so the software on the image would be covered in the sale to the client, but I want to make sure we're legit in terms of the imaging software.
