How to require login to access shared folder using Windows XP Pro on peer t

I have 8 computers in a small business office using peer-peer networking, all PCs are loaded with Windows XP Pro. All computers have their own shared folder on one computer named Backup. There is a folder on the Backup computer that I want to access from any of the computers. I’ve mapped the shared folder on each computer on the network, but I want to require a login whenever this shared folder is accessed from any of the other computers so only users that know the username/password can access it.

I’m not sure how to accomplish this. Any ideas?

Hey,

where this is in a workgroup enviroment, you will need to create a user account on everyone of the 8 computers that has the same username and the same password, then you need to grant the username access to the shared folders on every computer. That should work for you. If you don’t create the username to be the same on every computer and password, you would have to manage at least 8 different passwords and user accounts. hopefully that helps.

NTFS

Just a reminder that the drive will need to be NTFS formatted as apposed to Fat or Fat32.

NTFS allows for managed security on files and folders.
