There are several ways to skin this cat :)

If the current root account is enabled and the password known--by default, the root account is DISabled under Mac OS X--the "NetInfo" utility is probably the easiest way to go, since this will also preserve all other existing accounts and their passwords.

Booting up from the installation disk, one can use the "Password Reset" command. This shreds the NetInfo database as well, taking with it any access to existing accounts.

One can also boot into "Single-User" mode by holding down cmd-S at startup. Please man sudo, and please be careful: you won't get a second chance

Peace,

reset Admin password on a Mac

by sebmoy In reply to

I recently reset my Admin password and must have done a
typo (late in the night). Now I can't access it. I have tried
to restart using my install disk without success. Can you
please discribe how to use the Netinfo Utility you
mentioned above in greater detail. Also, is there any other
way to reset it?
Please let me know with specific details, as I do not want
to screw this up and your comment: One can also boot
into "Single-User" mode by holding down cmd-S at
startup. Please man sudo, and please be careful: you won't
get a second chance" is scaring me!
thanks!
