I have an old macbook pro that I’m interested in repairing myself. I believe the problem is the hard drive. I was going to replace it and install High Sierra. I understand that’s no longer supported, is this worth the time?
FWIW I just need a computer for personal things like managing finances, internet use, etc. Also I’m not a computer guy at all lol trying to learn something new

and as you say, it is no longer supported.
That doesn’t mean that it will not function, just that Apple will no longer be updating it and a lot of the newer versions of apps will not run on it.

For managing Finances it should be fine, depending on what software you would use to manage them but internet use will be limited as websites move on over the years and your version of (any) browser will reach a point at which it cannot handle the new and improved sites.

As a Do it Yourself exercise, with laptop hard drives being quite cheap, it would be something to play with.

      Steps to restore Macbook Pro-

Erase your Mac using Erase Assistant.

      Restart your Mac.

Choose Apple menu > Shut Down, press and hold the power button until “Loading startup options” appears, select Options, click Continue, then follow the onscreen instructions.

In the Recovery app window, select Reinstall for your macOS release, click Continue, then follow the onscreen instructions.
