How to run Exch. server & Proxy server

We have a small network comprising 2 servers (PDC/BDC) running NT server and 25 PCs running NT w/s. DNS is handled by our ISP. We have a 3com ISDN router (lanmodem) and are unable to receive email but we can send OK. Exchange server and proxy serverare currently installed on the BDC. I have been told that Proxy server may be blocking incoming mail but I don't know how to stop it since packet filtering is not enabled! There is only one NIC in the server which is mapped to 2 IP addresses - one internal to the network and one external, provided by our ISP - and I think I might need to install another NIC so that packet filtering is enabled and I can configure the proxy to allow incoming mail. Am I on the right track or not? I don't claim to be any kind of expert and, since I work for a charity, money is tight. I would REALLY appreciate any ideas anyone might have. I've tried MS Knowledge base but can't find anything that applies to my situation. HELP!

How to run Exch. server & Proxy server

Personally I would check how you are getting the mail from your ISP, if they are using SMTP mail forwarding, you can check you server is working by following MS Article Q153119. If they are not I would just make sure that in Microsoft Exchange 5.5 is getting the mail correctly either by sending an ETRN message or a Custom Command.

Hope this helps

Cheers

As far as I know for proxy u need 2 NIC cards - one with internal ip and another with external.Internal will have your private IP and external will have ISP provided IP.The external card will be connected to your router's port.
Moreover I am not sure if your exchange is configured with proxy server. You must create 2 wspcfg.ini file for use with exchange SMTP service. Save this file as wspcfg.ini in the directory where msexcimc.exe is located.
D not save the file in unicode format. SMTP port 25 on exchange will then be bound to proxy servers's 25 port.

Just check out and let me know.

Regards,
Sumit
