How to serialize a Form.?

By DS9 ·
I have created a form, to collect information from visitors to my web site, and I would like to add a serial number to each e-mail sent to me. Much like a hit counter, that advances (is indexed) after each time the form is used. I could then use it form member number, letter number or what ever the form's use dictated.

I'm using Front page 2000, and do not see any form features that would accomplish this. Perhaps there is some kind of VB scriping that I could utilize.???

Anyone with ideason this one.? Help would be appreciated.

How to serialize a Form.?

Hello,

http://www.asp101.com/samples/counter.asp

This code provides a numeric count that increments by 1 each ime the asp page is accessed. For example in your mail app, you can have it execute within a HTML form element which gives the textbox a value based on the count:

For example:
< input type="text" name="serial" value="<!-- #INCLUDE FILE="counter.asp -->">

Whoops, you may want to make that form element hidden of course.

Sorry Mike, I can not get it into a "Active Text Box" in FrontPage 2000. It just acts like any other Hit Counter. I can get the same results from the hit counter built into FrontPage, but can not get either one to work inside a Active text box.

What I need I guess is a way to use the OrderPage.htm.cnt file which keeps the current number for the FrontPage Hit Counter. The only thing in the file is "FPCounterFile 0000001732". That is the actual Hit Counter number, but I don't know how to transfer the numeric value to a FrontPage Form one line text window. Maybe I'm trying to do the impossible.??

Any other idea's....

Sounds like you're close.

You need to change the extension of your page to .asp -> this of course assumes you use a WindowsNT web server.

Click HTML at the bottom, you're now viewing the code behind the page. Where you want to insert the count put the: <!-- #INCLUDE FILE="counter.asp --> as the string for value, not equal to the value parameter.

e.g.: <input type="text" name="serial" value="<!-- #INCLUDE FILE="counter.asp -->">

Well Mike, I'm giving up for the time being on trying to add a seralized form number into a text box. I've wasted to many hours on it, so will try a new approach in a few days from now when a new piece of "Third Party" software I ordered arrives in the mail.

All I ever get, in the box, is the string itself. NO numbers. when I place it in the pages text, I get numbers just like any old fashon hit counter, but that of course does not transfer to the e-mail notification sent to me.

The new software adds 15 new components to FrontPage 2000, and creates a new drop down box on the menu bar. I will use the "Add current date", and "Add current time" (taken from the servers clock), as the "Serialized Registration Number".

If that does not work out, then I'll be back on TechRepublic again with even more questions.

Best Regards
