How to set up SMTP services on Win2000

by chuck . Updated 25 years, 7 months ago

I have what should be a simple question, but I’m wracking my brains over.

I have a small network with 3 PCs all running Windows 2000 server. They’re co-located at an Internet CoLo site and are used as web servers. My developers need to be able tosend mail from these machine. I’m trying to setup SMTP on my firewall PC so that the web servers can just deposit mail there and the SMTP service on the firewall will send it out. I guess I’m having a hard time understanding the SMTP protocol. Does my firewall have to log into another server to forward the mail or does it just send each message based upon the domain of the message? I’m unable to use the ISPs mail server because they expect mail to originate from an IP that is directly on their network.

Are there any good step by step articles on how to setup SMTP on Windows 2000.

Sorry for the simple nature of this question! Thanks for your help
