how to set value in ram bank on mb

By toptiger ·
i have a pIII 500 with 3 dimm slots (256k in slot 1, 128k in slot 3 and 128k in slot 3) on a 1440 bx/zx motherboard with no jumpers. bios (award modular bios 4.51pg) will not allow change in value for ram or slot.

system shows bank 1 set to 128k and banks 2-3 set to 64k, also shows 256k installed in slot 1, and 128k installed in slots 2-3.

boot up windows reads 384k ram. i have tried moving dimms but still can not get to 512k of ram.

need ideas on how to reset bank values for dimms to be 256, 128, 128 so windows will read all memory. (biostar and award web sites are no help and neither is the motherboard manual). all info on web says set valurs in bios...no can do unless i am missing something...duh?

Since the days of the original Pentium, most motherboards have only one jumper for RAM. That jumper is used to set the DIMM voltage to either 3.3 or 5 volts.
All size functions are handles by the BIOS.
Some MB handle size changes automatically at boot, others require you to enter BIOS setup to confirm the change.

First, check with your MB manufacture. It is possible that you have a limit of 128MB per slot. The manual usually has a table of acceptable memory configurations.
Another possability is that you got the newer quad density RAM that will not work with some MBs.
The MB mfg may have a BIOS upgrade to correct either or both issues.

That said, what OS are you running?
Windows 9X has been known to lock up in some installations with 512MB or more of RAM.
3 128's may actually provide better performance than your 512MB configuration.

with only the 256 slot 1 i read 256, with a 128 in slot 1 i read 128, with 128 in slot 1 and 128 in slot 2 i read 256!

mb manual ram table shows 256, 128, 128 max for 512 total

i may try 3 128's and see what happens

running w98se

thanks
bios update does not solve problem

memory is standard 100/133/pc

Set Clear ESCD in the BIOS.
If that won't work try unchecking Mem Limit.

If you are running a mixture of PC100 and PC133 memory did you remember to set CAS to 3 in the BIOS? (Do not use 2. It usually will not work on mixed RAM.)
