How to setup ODBC to Access mdb on other server on LAN

By jim359 ·

We have an Access 2000 back end (split) mdb that we link to via office desktops. The mdb presently sits on a web server that's part of our office network. This web server has an ODBC connection to the mdb so that an ASP website can interact with the mdb.

I'd like to isolate the web server from the office network, which means I'd have to move the back end mdb onto an office server for lan users, but somehow configure the web server to maintain connectivity.

I thought first I'll set up on the web server an ODBC connection where the System Data Source definition points to the mdb over the LAN to the office server (using a backbone lan between those servers). I mapped a drive, and added the System DSN definition.

Web site (asp) could not read data.

a) Is this method supposed to work, and if so what might I be doing wrong?
b) If this method doesn't work what are my options?

BTW, I wish MS-SQL 2005 were on my radar. I imported the back end mdb, but the front end mdb isn't a "project" which seems to be the only way Microsoft saw fit to allow Access to link to a SQL Server database. Too bad!!! And if that's not the reason then I don't know enough to pull it off. I'd prefer this SQL method by far!

Any help?

Thanks in advance.
