How to Setup RAID 1

By sergio_rp9 ·
good day to all.

i have an old server purchased 2 years ago, a Compaq Proliant ML 350 T03 with a 36.4 GB HD, 512 MB RAM, WIndows Server 2003. It has existing files which are important.

i am planning on setting up a RAID 1 configuration but i have no idea how. i have read about RAID and GHOST but have not done it in actual, and since im new to this i am quite hesitant on performing setup.

any help will be much appreciated. thank you very much.

Simple solution

by curlergirl In reply to How to Setup RAID 1

First and most important is that you need to have a second hard drive that is identical, or as nearly identical as possible, to the existing hard drive. For a very simple software mirroring solution, you can use the built-in mirroring capabilities of Windows 2003 Server. Just read the basic Help file for Disk Management in Win2K3 and it will describe how to do it.

Other than that, you would need to get a RAID controller card for your disk subsystem (SCSI or ATAPI, whichever you are using) and follow the directions for that particular controller; or if your server already has built-in RAID capabilities, follow whatever documentation comes with that controller. Often if you look up your server on the HP/Compaq support site, you can find documentation for any built-in RAID controller that came with the machine.

The software RAID solution may be the best for you in your situation, since often hardware RAID setup will require that the existing data be wiped from the hard drives before the array can be built.

Hope this helps!

another question. will there be a difference if the HD is partitioned, will i be able to mirror a HD with 3 partitions into 1 single HD?
