How to show effort, duration on business process diagrams?

By AlbanyPMP ·
I am doing some BA work for my client and have to create diagrams for all of their business processes. We are currently using Visio. However, we want to be able to show, on the diagram, effort expended for individual processes and/or durations. Is there a simple way to do this in Visio or is there a standard notation out there that someone else may have used?

In the label associated with the arrows or connectors to each process box, put in the time required.

If I remember rightly, it's possible to create custom properties. If I find details I'll repost.

Another possibility is to use a BPM app. I use Process Navigator which is essentially a set of Visio stencils & macros running as a plugin to Visio. I find it quite effective but overpriced.

I also evaluated (3 years ago)QMap which is similar but standalone and more reasonably priced. At the time it was a little raw but it's likely to have evolved since.

Effort, duration on business process diagrams

by rahul161 In reply to How to show effort, durat ...

Efforts are not tangible but duration are tangible. In order to track and show the effort and duration on the process diagrams, check with the business rules and see whether business rules implies to the individual activity or the entire process. Defining business rules in notes in Visio enhances to make a decision on the effort and duration required for particular activity. The only notation used is the Notes in Visio.
