Disable Messenger Service, or use utility.

by deepsand In reply to how to stop messenger in ...

Theoretically, you shold be able to completely disable the WinMessenger service via Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services/Messenger.

However, certain MS apps., including some versions of OE, ignore the setting and start it even when disabled.

In that case, the freeware utility WinMessControl should be tried. Bear in mind that completely disabling Messenger may block certain desirable systems notifications.

WinMessControl can be downloaded from

It's description is provided below.

Description
This small utility simply allows you to easily disable/enable the 'Windows Messenger' application under Windows XP.
It provides the following 3 modes:

1)Disable Windows Messenger Completely If you select this option, Windows Messenger is disabled completely, and you won't be able to use it in any way.

2)Enable Windows Messenger Without Interfering With Outlook Express If you select this mode, Windows Messenger is enabled, but it won't be loaded in the background when you use Outlook Express.

3)Enable Windows Messenger Completely If you select this mode, Windows Messenger is completely enabled. (This is the default mode in Windows XP)

You can switch between the above 3 modes simply by clicking the desired button.
