How to turn off "pop-up" windows in IE?

By Steve ·
Environment:
Operating systems Windows 98, ME, 2000, XP
Browser IE5, 5.5, or 6

Problem:
When visiting many sites new "pop-up" multiple advertising windows appear on my desktop which slows my progress in getting the information I am realy interested in.

Is there any in IE5, 5.5, or 6 to block the irretating windows from cluttering my desktop?

Advertising is what drives the internet, all that bandwith is needed for all the graphic ads. Some firewalls particularly one i am familiar with - Zone alarm - has a feature to block pop up ads -yoa can try it by downloading a trial 30 day copy which is the full blown version that expires after 30 days - it may slow your machine or your connection - but at the moment it is one way to block those annoying ads.

Nope, but there are many, many third-party programs that will kill popups. And most are freeware. Search any software archive for "popup killers" and you'll find them. You can even search in Technical Q&A here for "popup" or "pop up" and find outwhat's been recommended.

As said, there is no option in IE to block pop-ups.

Your options to avoid pop-ups include;
K-Meleon web browser www.kmeleon.sourceforge.net
This browser does have a built in pop-up blocking feature.

3rd party utilities to block adds include;
www.adsubtract.com
www.southbaypc.com/noads/
www.popupstopper.net
http://ranfo.com/popki.html

Pop-Up Stopper from panicware.com works very well.

Many users report extremely slow popup window creation with Internet Explorer. I've blown quite a bit of time scouring for answers to this problem.

The problem with most popup killer softwareis that it catches popups *after* the browser sees them and then tries to close it. If you have the slow-IE-popup-problem your popup will be killed but you'll still have the delay.

The mozilla browser (mozilla.org - where netscape technology is created) has has the fastest most effective and transparent _built-in_ annoyance-control options I've seen so far, such as disallowing webpages to: spawn pop-ups, raise/lower/move/resize windows, and other cool stuff.

Besides being possibly the best free personal firewall, Outpost (http://www.agnitum.com/products/outpost) can stop popups, ads, and many other annoyances from ever even reaching your browser. Filtering Flash is on their todo list (woo-hoo).

The latest version of the Mozilla browser (and most likely the latest version of Netscape) has an option to turn off pop-up windows.
