How to Unlock a Compaq Keyboard

By helirv ·
Dear Techrepublic members,we have three Compaq LTE 5400 laptop units, one of which now has the keyboard locked out. Accessing the information on the harddrive is not a problem because the harddrive just slides out and into the other units, but now we have a unit that we can't use. We removed what we believe to be the bios battery (located on the bottom side of the computer, 4.8v) but still were unsuccessful. A Compaq tech informed us that the units were so old that they no longer had manuals for them. But, we have been able to install dual OS's -
Win98 and Redhat 6.1 with no problems. The down unit has Win98 and NT4.0 Any suggestions would be appreciated, thank you.

Do you get any errors during boot? Is it possible that the flat cable attachment came lose? And if not, can you boot to a floppy and use the key board?

What you say you believe to be the bios battery may not be the bios battery. To reset the bios battery I whould remove all the batteries you can see with your eye and then let the computer stay without power for a few days so the bios battery drainscompletlly. Since most laptops have internal rechargeble batteries that will recharge together with the regular battery.

I had a similar problem with a compaq dealing with the system password. It's not exactly the same problem but what I did to correct it was to remove a jumper setting and reboot the pc. If this fails, my suggestion is to find a place that services old pc's / laptops and give them a call. Most can tell you over the phone.

You say the keyboard is locked - does it actually say that it is locked, or can you simply not use it? There are several connectors that attach to the keyboard - make sure all of them are connected - if the keyboard still appears dead, plug in an external keyboard and see if it works. If it works, then your keyboard may just be deaad, in which case a replacement is available at http://www.laptopsforless.com/compaqkeyboard.htm

Okay, I'm assuming that you've checked the cables, and tried using the keyboard from the "bad" unit on a known good unit and vice versa to rule out hardware failure.

Compaq has always been strange. I don't know if this will work on an LTE 5400, but I know it works on a few other Compaq laptops:

Remove A/C power
Remove laptop battery
Remove RTC battery (the little one, looks sort of like a watch battery)
Let the laptop sit for at least five minutes
Plug in ONLY A/C power
Turn laptop on and hold F10 key during POST.

On some Compaq laptops - the 1700 comes to mind - that procedure is the *only* way to reset the BIOS. If that works, reset the defauls in the BIOS, turn the unit off, then put all the batteries back in.

Hope that helps - good luck.
