How to update norton antivirus

By therockatmsu ·
I have a small network with around 100 computers. I have Norton Antivirus Corp. 8.1 and have problems updating it. I don't want to give our end users local admin privs. According to symantec you need power user or admin privs to update the virus definitions. I have all windows xp desktop and windows 2003 servers. Is there another way to accomplish this? Any help would be appreciated.

configure your primary server in your group, the one in which will obtain and hold antivirus definitions to obtain them from symantec. configure live update on that primary server to use internet explorer connection settings [or proxy settings if you use a proxy server]. Configure all other clients [both servers and workstations in the group] to obtain their antivirus definitions from the primary server.

you can also configure servers and clients not in the group to also obtain their antivirus definitions from the primary server.

the symantec/norton web site FAQ has complete, step by step instructions on how to configure live update for the Corporate Editions.

I forgot to add this in the orginal question. I will not be using a primary server to download the updates and then clients connect to it. Each client will be going to symantec to update there own virus definitions.

You could set up the update to run as a privileged service with the RUNAS command.
