How to use Dr. Watson with Debugger

By ddbaker ·
What is required to run debugger from Dr. Watson when a program crashes. Is there a default debugger with NT? Dr. Watson creates a user.dmp file and I would like to review it, assuming it might be helpful for identifying software issues.

If you are going to do some serious debugging then you need the corresponding "Symbol" files. These are on the NT CD and on the service pack CD. Basically Symbol files have checked or debug information to help with problems. Technet article Q169014. Explains how to set up.

You can also analyze the user.dmp (or sometimes memory.dmp) file with a tool from the NT Server Resource Kit called dumpexam.exe; there is also an associated tool called dumpchk.exe that verifies the dump file.

It can, indeed, be helpful as it can identify the processes that were running and their base addresses. From that and the fault address, you can usually infer what process or driver was at fault.
