How to validate Javascript setup?

By kanenas_0 ·
I have a very strange case with Javascript under XP SP2.
Javascript (v5.6) settings in IE are either enabled or prompt. JIT compiler (5.00.3810) is enabled along with Sun's Juva 2 v1.4.2_06.

Most everything works.
A local server running Jakarta, throws up a form screen that has drop-down selection lists.
I can click the drop-down and scroll to highlight an item (with mouse or keyboard) but the final click that selects it, has no effect.
I just cannot select anything on the drop-downs.

The screen works fine with Opera and it used to work fine with IE some time ago. It seems some software or security patch has corrupted something.

Question is, how do I find out the culprit? Alternatively, how do I verify if Javascript and its files, are properly in place and registered (I don't know which files are used by it).

I reinstalled the VM and JScript 5.6 but there was no difference. Disabling the firewall, restoring IE's defaults, disabling all IE plugins and trying combinations of Sun's Java and/or VM, had no effect either.

Any suggestions?
Thanks for any help.
