How would i set up LAN?

By mudasir_0072002 ·
In my organization there are 12 computers. I would like to connect them in a LAN (Client -Server) and also want to add the printer in the network. I have already done cabling. I have also given them IP addresses but without gateway and DNS server. All the machines has Win XP professional installed. I would like to install Win 2000 server in one computer to act as server. Please help me in this regard.
I want to manage all the rest of computers through this server and want to control them so that users on the client computers can be restricted and managed. Also, how would i add my printer hp laser jet 1100 in this network.

Please help me and define all steps which would take place in it very clearly.

First of all you should strongly consider not using Windows 2000 Server; it is unsupported through Microsoft now. No further updates are going to be released to the public.

Second, if you are going to require internet access on this LAN you will need a DNS server of some sort and a default gateway. Networks can be complicated beasts, and using technology that is really old does not make things easier.

Third, you may network your printer several ways, such as sharing it on a pc/server or using a JetDirect card to provide it with an IP address.

Can't most of the home routers also be used as a DNS?

Yes they can. As long as the router is configured to point to a valid DNS server (whether it be from the ISP via Static or DHCP, or a public DNS server)
