HP Color LaserJet 5M

By mjohnson ·
We have had this printer for several years, and it seems to work fine, but with a few issues. Previously we had it set up on a peer-to-peer network with windows 98. The problem we found here was we could not tell the printer to use the rear & manualfeed tray. HP knew of this problem and could not offer any real solution. We decided to change to NT which resolves this issue. On NT we also installed Office 2000 Pro. Now we are seeing other problems, the main issue is that we could be printing a 20 page document and after 2 or 3 pages of being perfect, it will start missing characters out of words. It does not happen for any particular characters. We have the latest drivers as per HP's web site, and Microsoft has no issues with office 2000. Can some one help, or even send us an earlier version of the driver. Thanks MJ

A couple of questions: Are you printing to the CLJ 5M via a PCL or PostScript print driver? The reason I ask is I saw a similar issue with an HP LaserJet 4X00 3-4 years ago at a former employer.

Try using the different print driver options:

HP PCL5, HP PCL 6, Microsoft PS, Adobe PS

Also try from a couple of different systems.

Good luck.

AFAIK, you may have two possible problems:
1. On-board printer memory screwed
2. Missconfigured printer driver [memory settings]
To find out what's wrong, you have to read the manual [Troubleshooting]. If you don't have one, try this:
1. Turn printer off-line (don't power off)
2. Press and hold "Test" button until you see testing status on your LCD-panel.
3. Read the test page to obtain exact amount of installed memory.
4. Check the amount you have installed in Printer Properties->DeviceSettings->Installed Memory (Kilobyte).

If the test page gives you definetely wrong figure, check your memory modules (if you don't know how, I'l give you advise later on). If your driver referred to incorrect memory size, correct it by test page amount.

We had the same exact problem with our HP LaserJet 5N. I tried reinstalling the drivers several times, changing the printer spool to RAW, only to find on printouts larger than 5 pages or when printing several items in succession produced "garbled" words and missing characters. Finally, we added more memory to the printer; and so far, so good.
