HP Laptop Boots to Dreaded Blinking Cursor Screen

By excel ·
I see that lots of other people have problems with PC's booting only to the blinking cursor screen. Mine started doing this last week after working very well but then one day it wouldn't shut down. I pressed the power button for 5 sec to shut it off. Next morning it would only boot to BC screen. I reseated memory, tried new hard drive, reformatted the old drive - problem is I can't boot from the CDROM either. I changed boot order in BIOS, etc - but nothing works. I have decided it is a bad MOBO or processor but before buying parts would like a second opinion. The laptop is too nice for me to replace the whole thing - I would love to fix this. Thanks for any help.

If you have given the correct description

Odds are that the M'Board is shot and needs replacing. If this is the case it would be cheaper to look at a new NB and this time also buy a NB cooler to prevent a heat buildup that can damage both the HDD and M'Board. Something along the lines of this works quite well but you may find a different product that suits your needs better or is more freely available where you are but this is a suggestion on what to look for

Any luck?

by colby.d.smith In reply to HP Laptop Boots to Dreade ...

Hi excel. When I heard your problem, it sounds pretty much the same as mine. My wife was using my laptop and it hung on her. She said she had to hold the power button down for 7 secs to shut it down and reboot. However, when the PC rebooted it went directly to the blank screen with the blinking cursor.

I can't get to the BIOS set up, safe mode, and I cannot boot from my CDROM with the XP setup disk. I dont' see any messages at all prior to getting the blinking cursor and I can't seem to get around it.

Just wondering if you ever found the solution to your issue as it sounds a lot like the situation I am facing.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
