HP laserjet 5si very noisy

By RG11 ·
I have a 5 si and when printing I am getting a very load noise which I think is coming from the back. Just sounds like something needs lubed. It is a squeaking sound that starts up onces the printer starts working. I have this going on with another 5si but its not as loud. I was wondering if anyone had the same problem and may have a fix for me..

The fuser is probably old and dirty. Consider getting maintenance kits for them, especially if it's been a long time since they've been serviced like that, or if you have high volume on them.

There's various moving parts in a 5si. The fan, fuser and wheels behind the fuser. (the fuser is the hot "iron" that melts the toner particles to the paper... so you want the printer to be cool when you work inside it).

Try to narrow down where the noise is coming from. If the noise comes as soon as the fan moves, then you can try oiling the fan.

If the noise seems to come as paper moves through the printer, then check the plastic rollers behind the fuser where the paper moves up before being dumped on the output bin. Often the plastic wheels will get coated with dust and grime. You can oil these with light oil as well.

If the noice is coming from the fuser... then your best best is to replace the fuser (which is not difficult to do on a 5si (printer must be off and cold...4 bolts inside, once those are removed, you should be able to slide the fuser assembly to the left and move it straight up and out).... but fusers are expensive and you will usually need to send in the bad one for a bit of a reduction in price. If you are not hp authorized, then get a printer repair company to come out and replace the fuser for you.

Check first the toner cartridge ? swap between printers to verify this problem.
Old/refurbished toner cartridges can make a very load noise.
Second step is to replace the fuser unit (you can swap it between printers too).
