HP notebook does not find dvd combo drive

By rmcguire ·
My Hp dv6243ci notebook running vista home does not recognize the dvd burner. The device manager shows a splat on the drive. I have uninstalled the drive and rebooted. I called HP support and they sent me a drive which has the same issue. The notebook has no recovery disk as they are on the hidden partition of the hard drive. The notebook now has SP1 installed and still no dvd drive. CMOS has one option for drives disabled or enabled, I have tried both. Oh yes the Warranty is up. Any ideas? Thanks Rick

Check for the drive in the BIOS

by Jacky Howe In reply to HP notebook does not find ...

If Windows is not detecting the CD-RW, DVD+/-R, or DVD+/-RW optical drive, and the disk drive is not listed in the Device Manager, take the following actions to recognize the drive in the BIOS.
Remove any disc from the disk drive, and turn the PC off.
Press the power button to turn the PC on, and when the first logo screen appears, press F10 repeatedly until the BIOS Setup screen appears.
On the BIOS setup screen, use the arrow keys to select Main . If it displays an option for an optical driver, select Enable .
Your BIOS setup screen may display different information, depending on what model of computer you have.
Alternately, press the F9 key to reset the BIOS to its default state.
Press F10 to save and exit the BIOS settings, and allow the computer to restart.
Recheck Device Manager to verify the CD, DVD+/-R, or DVD+/-RW optical drive is recognized. The drive should now operate properly.
If the name for the drive does not exist in either the BIOS or in Device Manager, use the HP Software Update utility to locate and reinstall the device driver.
You should also visit the HP website to locate and install the latest version of your BIOS.

This may be worth a try

Visit HP's Web Site here

Download and install the driver called Mobile Intel 945GM Express Chipset Family Driver

See if the Optical Drive is now seen. It is possible that if the drive is seen in BIOS that the Intel Chip Set Driver has been corrupted. Installing the above Driver should cure that problem.
