HP printer on Win95 PC

I have an HP 610c printer connected to a Win95 166Mhz PC. Both dinosaurs but until recently the printer worked fine. Now when I print something the printer starts flashing and the paper is drawn into the right place but then the error light comes on and the message is that the communication between the 2 devices is lost.

I removed the printer driver and reloaded an update. No different. I checked the cable is plugged in and OK. It’s fine.

What can the problem be and how can I fix it.
