HP Printer & the service running

By Mick@work ·
Folks,

I need to identify all the printers on my network & i was hoping to try SMS to detect them all.

My reason is i need to identify all devices running the telnet service & when i search by the tlntsvr service it only picks up PCs, servers & workstations.

I can't use WEBAdmin because it picks up printers on a number of networks off a shared backbone.

My intention was to search by the service running on a HP printer using sms but:

1. I'm not sure whether sms will detect these
2. I don't know the service running on HP printers

any info or advice is welcome

thanks for your help/time

HP Printer & the service running

Well, I don't have a direct answer to your question, except that I don't know if SMS would do it, and I don't know of any other utility that would. However, I do know that every network-aware HP printer runs telnet by default, so you can pretty much assume that any HP printer that has a JetDirect card in it is running telnet server. An effective if clumsy way to double-check would be to gather all of the IP addresses of your network printers and simply try to telnet to each one to see if you get a response. However, if you're on a very large network, I'm sure you wouldn't want to have to do this. Maybe someone else has a better idea. Hope this helps!
