HP ultrium tape drive problem

By omidhakan ·
i have installed a HP ultrium 960 to a Adaptec 29320A-R on HP proliant DL 380 G5 server, the tape drive is connected with a external scsi cable and scsi bus is terminated, server's os is Windows server 2003 R2.
the problem is when i try to get a backup in ntbackup it say that you should make free the media and when i free the media in computer management/removable storage it shows that is in "wait for writing label free"mode, but it doesn't finish it .
i can see 2 error in Event Viewer after that:
Event Id:11
Event Source:a320raid
Event Id:1003
Event source: SytemError

can eny one help me?

Re: HP ultrium tape drive problem

You say that it is connected by Scsi cable and then the scsi bus is "dissabled", may be this is the cause of the problem. You will need to activate the scsi bus to make it work properly. Please post back if you have anymore problems or questions.

You could try reinstalling the SCSI card

Possibly, there is something wrong with your Adaptec card. I ran into a similar problem with my Ultrium drive and it turned out to be SCSI card. After I removed the card and reinstalled it, it fixed the problem. Also, you need to have the HP SCSI cable that came with the Ultrium drive. Generic or "compatible" cables may not work correctly.

Good luck.

my ultrium drive has a rack-mount kit,so it has to cable, one hp scsi cable for using in the rack-mount kit and another cable is a not hp external scsi cable to connect rack-mount kit
to the server.i have another server and tape drive with the same config and same problem!

You could try just doing an unmanaged backup

If you have 2 servers with the same problem maybe its something with Ntbackup.

I'm not that familiar with Ntbackup, but I think you should be able to run an unmanaged backup that just overwrites any tape you put in. Heres a MS article about that
