HTML code

By jardinier ·
Quite some time ago I asked a question about a particular HTML code and was directed to a website, of which I now have no record, but which to the best of my recollection gave a simple, single word code that would retain the layout of, say, a poem without having to type in <BR> at the end of each line.

If someone knows this code, and perhaps also a website for finding some basic HTML code, I would be most grateful.

You must be talking about <pre> which inserts preformatted text into the web page.

One tutorial I can recommend is at W3C's site at

The author of the guide is Dave Raggett, the author of HTML Tidy - more details at http://www.w3.org/People/Raggett/tidy. You can also get Tidy as an extension to Firefox, which have also other extensions available for web page creation and maintenance.

If you are after an HTML editor, W3C offers the open source Amaya at http://www.w3.org/Amaya. I tend to use just a combination of WinSCP and Notepad followed by Tidy in Firefox or the online validator at http://validator.w3.org.
