http:://localhost no response

I have Windows XP pro. IIS is installed. WWW publishing service is running. IIS Admin service is running. I checked Default web site (from IIS console) and it is running. But when I type http://localhost/ or http://localhost/xxx.html (xxx.html is a test html file put in c:\inetpub\wwwroot), IE always hang for a very long time then says that “page can not display…”. I tried to reinstall IIS, disable McAfee Internet security (which includes virus scan, privacy service and firewall), turn off windows firewall, none of them works. Telnet localhost 80 seems OK. I have up-to-date windows updates. Any idea what the problem is? Thanks.
